Cypress
Bald Cypress
is a deciduous conifer, which grows to heights of 120 feet to 140
feet. The huge trunks yield large quantities of moisture-resistant
timber. It has a uniquely high resistance to insects, dampness,
and fungal decay. It is a reliable wood, stable with little shrinkage.
Cypress is extremely decay and insect resistant because of its natural
production of the preservative cypressine. It is an ideal wood for
exterior use and a stronger wood than cedar. It finishes, stains
and holds paint well and can be easily glued. It has an irregular
but attractive grain. Cypress wood is a beautiful warm brown color.
If a protective coating is applied to the surface, the true natural
beauty of the grain is exposed. If left unfinished, it will weather
to a charcoal or black color with tan highlights. This relatively
lightweight wood is strong, moderately hard, and straight grained.
The best grades have a smooth texture and an almost waxy feel.
